Holy Saturday

Job 14:13-14; John 19:38-42
Having grown up reciting the Apostles’ Creed every Sunday, I was surprised a few years ago to worship in a church that had eliminated the phrase “He descended into hell.” The omission ignores the belief that between Good Friday and Easter Sunday our Lord experienced the abandonment that all humanity must endure:
Christ accompanies the asylum seeker and the one brought into solitary confinement; he stays with the political prisoner and the hostage; he holds the hand of the nursing home resident who has no family or visitors. To them and to all of us the Psalmist declares: “If you ascend to heaven, God is there. If you make your bed in Sheol, God is there.” It is a great comfort to know that our Lord descends with us into the hell of human pain, loneliness, and grief.
But we also know that even in today’s deepest darkness there is more to come. On this Holy Saturday, may we affirm these lines from the hymn “A Sower Came from Ancient Hills:'' The Seed was buried deep in death beneath a bloodred sky, And deeper still was buried hope for those who watched him die. But then, in Joseph’s garden fair, as dawn broke o’er the land, The Seed from three days silent sleep, awoke at God’s command!
Prayer: Holy, mysterious God, even in our darkest times of despair, your loving arms hold us fast. May your Spirit accompany us all the hours of this day, that we may awaken tomorrow among your faithful people, singing the praise of our risen Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

La omisión ignora la creencia de que entre el Viernes Santo y el Domingo de Resurrección nuestro Señor experimentó el abandono que toda la humanidad debe soportar: Cristo acompaña al solicitante de asilo y al incomunicado; se queda con el preso político y el rehén; sostiene la mano del residente de una residencia de ancianos que no tiene familia ni visitas. A ellos y a todos nosotros declara el salmista: "Si subes al cielo, allí está Dios. Si haces tu cama en el Seol, allí está Dios". Es un gran consuelo saber que nuestro Señor desciende con nosotros al infierno del dolor, la soledad y la pena humanas. Pero también sabemos que incluso en la oscuridad más profunda de hoy hay más por venir.
En este Sábado Santo, podemos afirmar estas líneas del himno "Un sembrador vino de las colinas antiguas.'' La semilla fue enterrada profundamente en la muerte bajo un cielo ensangrentado, Y más profundamente aún fue enterrada la esperanza para aquellos que lo vieron morir. Pero entonces, en el hermoso jardín de José, al amanecer sobre la tierra, la semilla, tras tres días de sueño silencioso, despertó por orden de Dios.
Oración: Dios santo y misterioso, incluso en nuestros momentos más oscuros de desesperación, tus brazos amorosos nos sostienen firmemente. Que tu Espíritu nos acompañe todas las horas de este día, para que podamos despertar mañana entre tu pueblo fiel, cantando la alabanza de nuestro Señor Jesucristo resucitado. Amén.
