Mission Yearbook: Harvey’s Helpers spruce up church in Louisville

At Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church in Louisville, we have a large building in need of constant upkeep. Maintenance of the building and grounds overwhelms our limited maintenance staff and causes a strain on the budget.  As the buildings age, there is much to be done to repair, maintain and replace parts of the infrastructure. We realized that this strain was causing our structures to develop a “well-worn” appearance. What we did have was a group of members who love their church and started meeting on Monday mornings at 9 a.m. to become Harvey’s Helpers.  With the help of the building manager, we select projects within our skill set to work on for three hours each week.

We have painted nearly every room in the building, deep-cleaned the kitchen yearly and managed much of the landscaping. When we were up-to-date with projects at Harvey Browne, we reached out to sister churches in our presbytery and helped them with some of their needs. The dedication and teamwork of our group of men and women have led to a spiritual connection among the team as we keep up with each other’s health and family situation. This fall marked the third time Harvey’s Helpers has formed the core for a weeklong service trip to a disaster area to assist with the recovery. We’re not sure what shape Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church would be in without Harvey’s Helpers, but we do know how this teamwork has strengthened our lives. Be a Helper!

God, let me see the resources you have provided for our use. We ask you to instill motivation in helping others into the hearts of your children. Please provide support for Harvey’s Helpers to continue long into the future and the possibilities this brings be sought at other locations. Amen.
