The Voice of the Martyrs: Prison couldn't silence Helen's singing.

A Joyful Song in a Desert Prison
Few things made Helen Berhane happier than singing for the Lord. But Helen lived in the East African nation of Eritrea, where Christian worship and practice are highly restricted.

When Helen’s activities as a worship leader and youth worker were discovered, she was locked in a metal shipping container for many months. She was cold in the winter, swelteringly hot in the summer, and without plumbing all year long. But even in prison, Helen found a way to keep singing. It made the guards so angry that they beat and tortured her in an attempt to silence her voice of praise.

“I remembered a passage in Richard Wurmbrand’s book Tortured for Christ about how Christians, like nightingales, could not be prevented from singing even in captivity.”
—HELEN
