Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:23-26
LENTEN THOUGHT Frustrating, isn't it? You see the state of the world-the despair, the hurt, the pain, the need. And you wonder, 'what can I do?' or 'where do we start?'. Hunger, crime, abuses of power, racism, the innocent victimized-it almost seems too big to make a dent in these problems, especially since most have been in existence for the whole of human history.
In the passage above from the book of Matthew, Jesus was responding to His disciple's frustrations from learning how HE shared it was difficult for wealthy people to inherit the Kingdom of God. There were obviously many wealthy political and religious leaders all around them, and they were thinking, 'If we are to share about the hope of the Kingdom, but it's so hard for these people to understand, then who's left, and what can we do? Jesus taught them that the answer lies with God, not them.
Jesus said in John 16:33 that in this world we would have stresses, troubles, conflict, and difficulties. BUT, Jesus was our overcoming King, and through Him, we can partner with what God is doing and achieve the impossible-not on our own power, but God's. When you participate in any God-honoring endeavor, like sharing HIs love in speech, sharing resources for those in need, or traveling to assist those in need of medical care access, you are walking with God to see Him do the impossible.
CHALLENGE In your prayer time this week, communicate those areas of your life where you see no solution. Voice to God how without his intervention, there is no way these issues can be resolved, corrected, or redeemed. Then ask God to reveal how he is already at work in your life to do the impossible; to work in a way that leaves no doubt that God rescued you. Celebrate His love and saving grace in your life with thanksgiving. Embrace the 'impossible.'
